Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance provides financial protection against disasters. A standard policy insures the home itself and the things you keep in it.

Homeowners insurance is a package policy. This means that it covers both damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This includes damage caused by household pets.

Damage caused by most disasters is covered but there are exceptions. The most significant are damage caused by floods, earthquakes and poor maintenance. You must buy two separate policies for flood and earthquake coverage. Maintenance-related problems are the homeowners' responsibility.

There are basically six different types of coverages. Some may be required by law. Others are optional. They are:

  • Bodily injury liability, for injuries the policyholder causes to someone else.
  • Medical payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP) for treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder’s car.
  • Property damage liability, for damage the policyholder causes to someone else’s property.
  • Collision, for damage to the policyholder’s car from a collision.
  • Comprehensive, for damage to the policyholder’s car not involving a collision with another car (including damage from fire, explosions, earthquakes, floods, and riots), and theft.
  • Uninsured motorists coverage, for costs resulting from an accident involving a hit-and-run driver or a driver who does not have insurance.

The most common policy for small businesses is the Businessowners Policy (BOP). The BOP combines coverage for all major property and liability insurance risks as well as many additional coverages into one package policy suitable for most small businesses.

The BOP generally includes both property (real and business personal) and business liability.   To cover specific risks associated with a business, a variety of additional coverages may be added to the basic BOP.

Only small- to medium-sized businesses that meet certain criteria are eligible for a BOP. However, we offer other lines of insurance for larger businesses.

Farm insurance provides financial protection against disasters, much like a homeowner policy does. . A standard policy insures all dwellings on the farm premises, in addition to such things as farm equipment, livestock and farm type buildings.

Farm insurance is a package policy. This means that it covers both damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This includes damage caused by livestock and/or household pets.

The advantage of this product is that it gives a broader range of coverage for the farmer.

The umbrella liability policy is a very specialized insurance policy. Its sole purpose is to protect your assets against liability awards that exceed the limits of your basic insurance policies (homeowner/auto/business).

Specialty lines such as boats and recreational vehicles can be added to existing policies in certain situations.  However, insuring them individually provides the broadest coverage.

Motorcycles cannot be added to other policies; therefore, you must insure them separately.
